More then one hundred people responded to Hargrim's posters and town criers' calls for adventurers. A wilderness post with some strict rules but decent pay. After all the contests and interviews Hargrim winnowed the group down to six individuals. In typical lodge fashion they were a mixed group. One human, two dwarves, one orc, one elf, and one cambion made up the group. Their names were Kain, Dimitri, Kenison, Vikor, Kord, and Ratash respectively. One of the group was familiar to Hargrim. Kain had been at Eagles Nest for almost a year working alongside the others to restore and maintain the keep. It was for this reason Hargrim decided to put Kain in charge of the group. Their first mission would be to map the territory around Eagles Nest to the former watch tower emplacements used by Llesendor. It was about a 15 to 20 day mission depending on travel and the time the cartographer (Vikor) needed to draw his maps.
Hargrim called the group the Wardens of Eagles Nest. They were also made members of the Lodge of the Bronze Knights. Dimitri and Kenison, were military trained giving the group a knowledge of martial matters. Vikor, was a hermetic mage giving them magical knowledge. Kord was a priest and Kain a fighter/priest which would round out and hopefully bring balance to this batch of wardens. Kain decided to make the trip on foot and take pack mules for supplies. Dimitri had a bear for a mount and companion, named Beluxi.
Their first night out and Kain was already having trouble leading the band of wardens. Dimitri found his religion laughable. Kenison made a remark that Kain would have been beheaded back where he came from. Kain was of the Order of Ixian, and kept his beliefs to himself unless asked. The first watch of the first night saw the group spied upon by goblins. There were only five of them and they were lightly armed, no real threat to the group of seasoned adventurers. The moment the two on watch noticed them and woke the others the goblins ran away. Second watch saw the return of three of the goblins. Kain felt a more firm chase would be appropriate, but before he could act Dimitri sent Beluxi to kill the goblin. One goblin was mauled and dead before anyone could do anything. Kenison grabbed one to question and the third ran away to join the last two who were far in the distance already putting as much distance as they could between them and their attackers. Beluxi, however wasn't finished. It continued to attack the goblin that Kenison was trying to hold on to. It was a mixture of luck and Beluxi's battle training that kept Kenison from being savaged along with the goblin. Kenison managed to put himself between the bear and the goblin. When asked why he attacked, Dimitri said they woke him up twice and had weapons. It was an argument no one else really understood at the time, but would prove telling later. The captive was healed and questioned. The goblin claimed to be a part of a hunting party for a tribe that was five days away. That fit with their equipment, but none were sure about the location of the tribe being accurate. They released him (much to Dimitri's dismay) and told him they were sorry for the death of his companion. The goblin raced away, thankful to be alive. Kain gave Dimitri an order not to attack unless told to from now on. Dimitri was angry and judgemental, but agreed to follow the order. The last watch passed without event.
Their next day of travel saw them to their first outpost by nightfall. It was the spire outpost, and still manned by mercs. The top of the spire had a wyvern nest that was still occupied by young wyverns. They and the mercs below operated with an uneasy peace. The men stayed camped in the early morning when the wyverns came out to hunt and the wyverns left the men alone (mostly because of numbers they believe). They spent the night there getting a good rest and started off in the late morning on the advice of the occupying mercs. Dimitri wanted to stop and kill a wyvern for profit, but Kain wouldn't allow it. Later in the day they spotted a lone figure in the distance watching them. Perhaps the figure knew he had been spotted because he dropped to the ground just afterwards. The group closed the distance and found a fifteen year old boy, beaten and battered. His name was Jarod and he was from Jordan's Landing. He had escaped from the town that was taken over by Half-orcs, hobgoblins and goblins. Dimitri wanted to leave immediately for the town to rescue it. Jarod told them of an army waiting there. The goblins had probably been scouts for the army. Dimitri's instinct to kill them all had been correct even if for reasons the others didn't understand. Now he wanted to charge towards the town and rescue it. They healed and fed Jarod and asked him more questions about the town and its captors. The boy knew there were several seperate groups numbered more then twenty (that was as high as the boy could count). The attackers were lead by a pair of half-orcs and eight hobgoblins. Kain decided to stay on task and use a message spell to get orders from Hargrim. Dimitri had had enough and left the group in disgust to go to Jordan's Landing. It was three hours later when Hargrim contacted them with a new contract to scout the town and report back. They were not to try to attack the army alone. Jarod decided to go with the group.
They started tracking Dimitri and heading towards Jordan's Landing. They were at least three hours behind him. They were on foot and Dimitri was riding Beluxi. By morning they were six hours behind Dimitri, but the tracks indicated a slower pace. Jarod told them that he had been followed out of town by a group of hobgoblins. They traveled the day and into the night. Ahead they spotted a campfire about an hour ahead. They used magic to determine it was the group of hobgoblins. They sent a message to Dimitri that they were at the camp and would attack in an hour. Vikor used a time cube to give everyone a rest. There were 8 of the enemy. Kain gave orders to kill all of them. Kenison suggested they take a captive for questioning again. Kain agreed. Dimitri was angry at Kain still and didn't attack until given the order. He was angrier still that this time they were to kill the enemy when last time they weren't, viewing it as inconsistency and lack of leadership. They attacked and killed the hobgoblins. The hobgoblins were wearing an insignia not known to the area. They were well disciplined and organized. They were also soon dead. The group found out that there were two goblin camps, a hobgoblin, an orc and at least one other encampment at the town. They had brought some of their own slaves and enslaved the town when it was conquered. They had been there for a moon!
They traveled on and soon discovered they where being spied upon with magic. One of the enemy had had a copper ring. The ring was not magic in itself, but it was being used as the focus point for scrying magic. The enemy certainly knew their group had been killed and at least partially the make up of the group if not all of it from the goblin scouts they had encountered at the beginning of all this. They decided to continue on and set up an ambush for the attackers they were sure were on their way. Kain was having trouble keeping the group running smoothly. They had all the skills needed for their mission, but they needed to be organized or things would not go well at all. They could counter the scrying at will and needed to set up their ambush. They were three days away from Jordan's Landing. If they could pull it together they had a chance. If not, well the coming army would chew them up...

Yeah, an Ixian cartographer! Good luck there Kain. It's a tough act.

Glad to see this rebooted...

Misprint or misread but the Orc Mage is the cartographer. Don't know if the Ixian can even write but he does have a tough act.

The group continued its journey towards Jordan's landing. It was early afternoon when they spotted movement in a copse of trees about 150 yards ahead. It was a hunting party out looking for an escaped slave, Jarod. After Kain and Dimitri stonewalled them trying to get information out of them the fight was on. It was a short fight. Two goblins survived and one was questioned. His knowledge (and intelligence) was quite limited. Dimitri had them strip down to nothing and run off. Vikor sent an air elemental to chase and harrass them. They used a projection spell to give Hargim the information they gained from the goblin. It was not enough, and so the group traveled on getting ever closer to the main army of the enemy. The next day they head out and spot a goblin riding a wolf about half a mile ahead of them. Tracks show that it had been part of the earlier group that had escaped their notice. It was keeping pace with the group staying far enough away to be out of range. Dimitri advised leaving the scout alone so they could send a lone scout out that night to gather information while the rest of the group kept the wolf riders attention. Kain thought he should go, but was convinced that Ratash would be a better choice. That night Ratash left the group to travel to the town alone to get information. They all had a one shot magic item that allowed them to teleport back to Eagles nest should they be in such dire need. The third day dawned. Kain had them march only half the day and even that was against his better judgement. Dimitri was more knowledgeable in martial matters and convinced Kain to this point. They had hardly arrived when they spotted a solitary wolf (no rider) lay down some 200 yards away in some brush. They also spotted a dust cloud raised by a group of some sort moving west just to the north of them. Soon they spotted yet another group south of them moving west, albeit at a much slower rate then the northern group. Spells of sight bring in to focus both groups. The northern group was a band of 25 well armed and disciplined hobgoblins. They were in a forced march that put them about 30 minutes away from the adventurers. The southern group was made up of 8 orcs and 20 goblins and was obviously an undisciplined group not in much of a hurry...an hour away. The adventurers decided to back away from the town and match speed with the quicker group until they could find a defensible hilltop to fight from. They found a hilltop but there was not much defensible about it other then having the high ground. They set up and the hobgoblins moved in to attack. They were very well organized and formed a skirmish line with sword and shield in front and polearm behind, while a rank of archers kept back to harrass the group. Vikor cast armor cutting on Dimitri and Kenison, as well as speed on Beluxi the bear. Kord cast benediction on Dimitri,Kenison and Kain. The skirmish line moved up and the group moved forward to meet it. The clash was fierce and even with magic took a long time. Their armor was no use against the two dwarven fighters, but the hobgoblins outnumbered them almost 5 to 1. The archers rained arrows on the group until Dimitri and Beluxi finished off the left side of the skirmish line and charged forward to engage them. That left Kenison and Kaine with the remaining line and the mage and priest backing them all up. Vikor summoned a lesser earth elemental that took a few shots before being cut down. Kain moved with incredible grace dodging attack after attack. His unarmed fighting style was not very effective against the well armored foe. The fight was glorious and in the end, no comrades had fallen but 25 hobgoblins lay dead on the ground. The warriors heal those they can, search the fallen foe and pile the dead into a pyre. Vikor summons a fire elemental to consume the bodies and send them on their way to the nether realms.
The companions strike out in hopes of finding the orc and goblin mixed patrol to the south. But on the western horizon is seen the silhouette of riders. They settle into a defensive position and await the arrival of the horsemen unsure if it will be time for greeting or ambush.
After 20 minutes or so it is plain that 1 rider is leading 4 horses. After checking by various means, it appears the rider is an elf. Closer examination places a torgue on his neck, the symbol of the lodge in a tin hue. This signifies the elf as a functioning member of the lodge as well.
Kain stands and walks to meet him, the clasp forearms in the way warriors greet each other and speak in low voices unheard by the others. As they approach the others Kain introduces the elf as Elohir Silverthorn and then walks toward Kinnison. After reaching the surly dwarf he hands 2 plain rings and the messaging bracelet. “These are yours now as is this.” With that he bids you all good luck, and hands Kinnison a new bronze torque. Then without delay he grasps his brooch and disappears.
After varied introductions and questions you discern that the elf is to replace Kain in the wardens as the original mission was to be a mapping venture and this upcoming series of combat missions is not suited for the scholarly. Hargrim has ordered Kain’s return and sent the elf as his war compliment. Orders as for Kinnison’s promotion are as this. Kinnison is a warrior of repute, learned in the military ways of leadership and battle tested. He has a writ of acknowledgement from the king of his land and will be better suited for the task at hand.

Don't know if Vikor should feel insulted or happy with a compliment. I guess Hargrim is satisfied that I can take care of myself after all Vikor is the most intelligent member of the group.
