In your games, do the wizards tend to wield the most damaging weapon possible like great swords or do they tend to wield spellcaster themed weapons such as staves and daggers?

Not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with a sword-wielding wizard (Gandalf comes to mind) but the impedance rules discourage wizards from wearing heavy armor and shields unless they invest in the Armor and Shield Use disciplines but they have no mechanical incentive to wield lighter weapons over heavier ones.

Well, in the initial design, we weren't looking to echo a lot of the (somewhat arbitrary) archetypes and stereotypes set up by 1st ed AD&D. (Incidentally, the magic system was at first rather different, but evolved back into what turned out- to our surprise- to be Magic-Users, Illusionists, Clerics, and Druids.)

So taking Hermetic Magic doesn't mean anything in terms of what you can and cannot use for combat.

But just as it might seem a bit silly to have some old wizard hefting a claymore, the same is true for a tailor or peasant. Some game systems have a minimum strength requirement for certain weapons- no reason to not have a similar rule if you'd like.

Maybe something like, the min strength required is the max damage done by a weapon just by die rolls (and intrinsic adds). Thus a claymore requires a min strength of 10, a heavy lance 12, a dagger 4, a mace 7.

I like that strength requirement idea. I would also add that a character would suffer a to-hit penalty equal to his strength difference with that requirement. So a character with a strength of 6 would suffer a -2 penalty to-hit with a long sword.

Thanks!

I like the strength requirement, and M's advice on penalties.

I think it gives a nice reason not to make a heroic hero with a 6 str.

Damn, Greg, Metathiax, that is some inspired stuff. I'm adding that to WGJ3.

Yeah, that's what I call a good collaborative effort. Cool
