Was talking with Rasfrassen today and we realized there had not been a post of our game for a few weeks. We are still playing (I think). There have been a few family events and Dartavian has been going thru an eye problem. I think he should just put on an eye patch and we will make it a pirate game!!!

I should be ready to go next Sunday now that I can see again.

PostPosted: Fri May 28, 2010 2:17 pm    Post subject: On the fifth day Reply with quote

The Lodge of the Bronze Knight was divided. Spread over hundreds of miles of terrain. The scouting party was in the northwest spying on the goblins. A supply party had been made and gone south, back to Badgers Mill. Last we have the three that remained at Eagles Bluff with the soldiers guarding the warning beacon. It was on the fifth day that the test of our metal began. The scouts fought off a party of gnolls and gained important information. Eagles Bluff came under siege, not by the forty gnolls the scouts were lead to believe, but by a couple of thousand troops. Gnolls, men and elves made up the army. Gilbert was the first contact the enemy had, they came forward under a white flag to offer our men the chance to leave without a fight. They had until dawn tommorow. Spirkle used a messaging spell to warn Greyson, the paymaster, (and only one we really knew) at Badgers Mill. The supply group was to resupply and return to Eagles Bluff, but as soon as the commander heard of the attack from Greyson, he declared a religious holiday and shut the camp down. At least we knew the traitor now. During the feasting Hargrim sent Bink and Feebo back to Llesendor to warn the queen of the traitorous commander. He also had the remaining supply group gather as much food from the feast as they could and then headed back to reinforce Badgers Mill, but they would not get back before it was all over. The building supplies would have to wait, they were under guard. Razzeel, after a brief rest, transformed himself into a Hippogriff and carried Conn and Lars back to Eagles Bluff. Several stops were needed to allow rest and recasting, but the journey was accomplished in hours instead of days. The landing was rough, Razzeel's spell wore off almost before landing, no injuries though. Almost at the same time Bink and Feebo arrived in Llesendor. They requested an audience with Morgan Verona, an acquaintance of the lodge. They were kept waiting for hours and finally greeted by none other then the royal consort! He informed them that the queen was afflicted and he would deliver the message to Morgan. Bink, being quite intelligent, surmised the rot of the chain of command may go higher then anticipated. He stubbornly (although respectfully) refused to deliver the “personal” message to anyone other then Morgan Verona himself. In response he and Feebo were taken to a tower suite and locked in until they came to their senses. They made themselves at home and waited. The royal consort was ignorant of Bink's ability to cast, and Bink was quick to scry out some answers. The queen was not afflicted, but praying and Morgan Verona was riding with a contingent of soldiers, but it was dark and he could not tell their location. For days they were kept prisoner, and Bink continued to use his magic to gather information, Feebo deferred to Bink and endured the situation as best he could. Gilbert had been handling the negotiations until Conn, Lars and Razz had arrived. He was grateful to have a councilman he could hand things over to, and the new arrivals had information Gilbert was unaware of. There were siege machines just out of sight of Eagles Bluff. The situation looked grim and the attack would begin in the morning. Razzeel called upon his diety, The Dragon, to send a lesser avatar to aid them. His summons was successful, and the salamander was able to reach the siege machines and set them ablaze. Morning came and no assault. Another messenger arrived to deliver another deadline. Their intent was clear, wear us down and make us leave without a fight. A few days pass, each time a promise of attack and offer of free passage. Razzeel was tired of messengers and told the last to send for the lord he spoke of. He was done talking to underlings. A figure in full plate arrived, an elf. He claimed to be the Lord of the Valley, and this stronghold was his by right. Razzeel refused him entry. The elven lord taunted Razz declaring The Dragon dead. Razzeel replied, “If my god were dead, then I would have no power.” and the elven lord laughed aloud, “What power.” In an instant there was a deafening blast as lightning scorched the ground where the elven lord had stood. There was nothing there, an illusion, but laughter rang off in the distance. Gilbert was nearby and had made an important discovery, being sensitive to magical influences he determined there was a magical shield around Eagles Bluff. It must be this field keeping them out, but why and how long would it last. Gilbert also found that in the chamber below, mysterious gemstones were appearing in the sockets around the great diamond, and it seemed to be unlocking the mechanism. He told Razzeel and showed him the stones. Razz was not as smart as Bink and he knew it. Bink had asked Gilbert to help him with his original research of the room, and Gilbert had already shown some mystical ability, perhaps he could tell Razz more. Gilbert was indeed familiar, he himself had a few spells. Razz was surprised. Gilbert had never shown any such abilities, until now that is. Whatever the case they were most useful in finding some answers among the books and items that remained. The lord of the valley was indeed an ancient heir to the kingdom of long ago, but he had fallen from grace and was banished to the blood realm. He was Trashion, the Blood King. The remains of the scouting party had been pursued by the goblins almost all the way back to Eagles Bluff. It wasn't until they had almost arrived that they found out they were being herded. As they approached the bluff they were met by the Blood King's attendant. Spirkle and Legar were asked to dinner, the remainder of the party would be safe in the mean time. Trashion wanted to ask them a favor. As councilmen of the Lodge of the Bronze Knight, would they carry his message to those on Eagles Bluff. They would be well paid if they could get everyone to leave. Legar was immediately agreeable at the mention of pay. Spirkle was more cautious. Razzeel gave the order, no more messengers. They could not afford to let any more stones unlock. Shoot anyone that comes up as soon as you see them. Razzeel was not sure what to do next, he knew the throne had something to do with the great diamond, but what? Only one way to find out. He sat down. The light from the great diamond was blinding. It hit Razzeel with such force that it picked his eight foot frame up like a feather, and blew it backwards into the wall behind the throne. He lay there unconscious, but as the light faded there was someone else on the throne. The one who was bound to it since their arrival, Hargrim. The supply group only saw a light flash from the sky and Hargrims clothes and equipment fall to the ground. Hargrim was bare as the day he was born, and sitting on the throne facing the great diamond. Karlin brought him clothing. Gilbert brought Hargrim up to speed on developments. Razz was checked for injuries, but none were found. He simply wouldn't wake up. Unknown, for the moment, Razzeel was indeed still watching events, but from INSIDE the great diamond. The many faceted view confused him at first, and his first sight being a naked dwarf didn't help matters much. He could hear Hargrim speaking, but could Hargrim hear him? Razz spoke and Hargrim turned to Razz's unconscious form, success! Razzeel had to get Hargrim to remove the gem, but for some reason he couldn't say the words. Anything else, but not those words. Outside things were getting worse. The next set of messengers were beginning their ascent. It was Legar and Spirkle. Conn and Lars looked at one another and drew their bows, the order stood. Razzeel was trying to get Hargrim to act, and fast. Hargrim was not understanding and grew frustrated. He grabbed up Striker, the great mallet found near the throne. If he couldn't do take the stones from the floor, maybe he could smash them. Razzeel cried out, “Not that one!”, just before he struck. Hargrim shifted his weight mid-swing, bringing all his strength to bear and smote the great diamond in the center. It was as if the sun itself had exploded in the room, the light blasted forth passing through stone itself flaring to eclipse the daylight. As it passed the army each soldier, (actually a form of demon), was incinerated. Even the two messengers that approached were gone. The real Legar and Spirkle were in the main tent of the greater demon, Trashion the Blood King. All pretenses gone the demon grabbed up his weapon and attacked with spell and blade. Legar jumped to attack, keeping himself between the demon and Spirkle. The goblins fled, leaving the remaining scouts (Varus, Malach, and Rufus) staring at the tatters left of the command tent. Instead they saw the demon fighting Legar and Spirkle. It would take them precious time to race to their aid. The demon fought with maddened abandon, using spells and abilities to strike at his foes. His blade was as dangerous as his magic. The armor encasing the demon soaked up damage, but Legar was not deterred. Legar was a blur of fury himself. His defenses were solid as steel and each attack bit deeply even past the plate of the enemy. Spirkle kept spells flying to heal and help Legar. Blood flew and the others arrived to aid. The Blood King was desperate, he tried darkness, invisibility, but nothing helped he was doomed. The final blow fell and he vanished in cloud of smoke and ash. Inside, the great diamond was destroyed, the fragments had bonded to the wall of the room creating a mystic lens that showed the entire surrounding of Eagles Bluff. Hargrim was blinded by the radiance of the explosion for weeks, Razz was deafened for a similar time from being inside the gem when it burst. Gilbert, miraculously, escaped harm. Hargrim was still connected to the room and could see further through the magic room. In Razzeels hands were clenched the gemstones from the floor, but what they were and how they got there is still a mystery.

Wow. Great read.

The LBK is getting pretty tough. Always a challenge for the GM.

Hot stuff.

Hey GM, what level are these guys now? And yeah, echoing Swill, what do you think of combat in Wayfarers as PCs get tougher and tougher. Is combat difficult scaling with level, and is still challenging, or are battles getting easier/harder as levels go up?

I think Legar was 7th lvl, Raz 6th or 7th, my main character in the last post was 5th and there are a few lower lvls too.

Legar has reached 9th level, I am forwarding Swill his updated character sheet. I believe Razz has reached 6th circle.

Scaling is a little tough, most of the time I cut it pretty close. Now we are moving on to a new storyline/chapter. I have a few ideas but real life lately seem to be getting in the way. I will have more details ready for them next week so it should be interesting.

Summer has come and gone. Llesendor has recalled its forward lookout posts, and the Lodge of the Bronze Knight has manned Eagles Bluff permanently. Hargrim, Kuloc, Orwin, Torin, Glamli and Gilbert have taken up station at the bluff. Hargrims reputation and leadership have allowed him to gather over seventy people to go to Eagles Bluff and restore it to its former glory. It will make a fine forward base of operations for the Lodge and a great testament to Hargrims engineering skills.
The past few months have been quiet, but about mid september a sealed delivery arrives from Baron Thaer. Inside is a letter and a shipping receipt. The letter tells of strange creatures sighted between Vesbridge and the Cackling Crow (and inn owned by Vlad's parents). There have been several attacks that follow the same pattern as the demon we battled with almost a year ago. The letter is dated october 27, only a month after we battle the demon! Its taken almost a year to get here! The receipt is for a crate 1'x5'x7'. Locien, Bahg and Ned are sent to fetch the crate. It turns out to be a mirror like object. Although the surface is non-reflective it is decorated and laid out to be a mirror. Locien determines that it is an ancient portal that is activated by applying mirror oil.
Our lodge members have various contacts throughout Llesendor, and using them we find several bits of useful information. Duncan, an ogre, may hold a flask of the mystical mirror oil. He travels the Veriland road selling trinkets. Three days north of the Cackling Crow some rangers tracked a strange creature to a cave.
It was breakfast time at the Lodge of the Bronze Knight. Many members were in the hall enjoying the meal when Razzeel was suddenly interrupted by a mental message. The voice rang with power and authority. “Bring me Madriganii Illiesses's head and you shall be rewarded. You can find me in Zalen Vale.” Razzeel knew of Zalen Vale and the ancient drake that lived there. The demon in question was one of the drakes first victims. It had been stolen and later released. Now Razzeel and the Lodge of the Bronze Knight was tasked with tracking the demon down, slaying it and returning it's head to the drake of the vale. They left the same day. Leaving careful instructions on guarding the mirror in case it was activated from the other side.
Eight lodge members rode out, headed for the Cackling Crow. On their fifth day of travel the come up on a post driven into the ground in the middle of the road. There is a head spiked onto the top of the post and a sign underneath reading “Soon Legar”. Underneath the sign is a scroll case. Inside is a complete map of the Cackling Crow. Vlad's parents may be in danger.
Another four days sees the party arrive in Creston. Most of the group stay at the inn while Razz and Varus guard the horses and goods out in the stable. Conn takes to the edges of town to keep lookout. Conns sharp eyes spy a shadow leaping from rooftop to rooftop. He follows at a run. Meanwhile another shadowy figure hurls a bulging canvas bag into the window of the room where the others are staying. It practically bursts open and feral cats are everywhere. The cats are tearing throughout the room trying to get out, causing chaos. Outside in the stable a hideous creature attacks Razz and Varus. Its twisted form reminds Razz of the undead, but it wasn't so. It was some form of demon that looks like someone we encountered a year ago in Vesbridge...Cooper, and it wounded Legars horse with a terrible claw-like hand in a check mark fashion. It was in plate mail and wielded a battle axe. Varus put up a fight, but he was not to last. Razzeel called up his god's wrath to smite the demon, but he underestimated its strength. Conn arrived and his arrows immediately turned the tide. The demon called forth darkness and shape-changed to escape down a rat hole. By the time they all figured out where he had went it was too late. Our trackers tried to find it, but only found the large tracks of the other shadowy figure. We followed them out into the night. A voice shatters the silence of the night with “MATE” and seven trolls ambush our party. We are none of us rookies and the ambush was hardly a surprise. The battle rages. Godly power smites and shields, swords and bows bite and slash. The trolls stand their ground, but in the end they all fall. The group tends their wounds and that of Legars horse. The next morning, after a little rest, they hit the road once more.
A couple of days of travel and another warning was found. A five foot circle of black and brown stones laid out in the symbol of the Lodge of the Bronze Knight. On the back of each stone is the name Legar. Conn decides to be clever and rearrages the stones to “Legar was here”. Come evening and we spy a campfire ahead. The camp is empty and a pot of stew hangs over a campfire. We find no tracks and no sign of an owner. We move off and camp elsewhere. Mid-day the next day they should arrive at the Cackling Crow, and whatever awaits them there.

The group of adventurers tops the ridge before the Cackling Crow and sees that it is quite full. There are 10 wagons in front of it and a fairly full stable as well. They also spot a look out on the top of the roof. Conn goes to investigate. Despite being as stealthy as is possible the lookout was waiting with bow drawn on Conn to peak over the roof. He claims the group was expected. The rest of them ride down to the Crow and head for the stables. The stable hand looks a little confused but offers to take their steeds and asks them if they want the same accommodations for the horses as last time. Now its their turn to be confused. According to the stable hand they were here two days ago?! There are guards all over and even inside the inn there are those with crossbows ready to fire upon them. They are told that someone is waiting to speak with them. Everywhere they are met with guarded hostility and the same confusion.
As they are directed into the back of the inn the reasons for the attitudes of the others become clearer, or so they think. Lord Blackmoore is waiting for them. He wants the map that they found early on their trip. They want to know why he wants it. There is some dickering back and forth, then Razz makes a short remark about wasting time and gives Blackmoore the map, and Blackmoore promptly throws it into the fire. That did nothing to calm the situation. He finally claims that it was being used to track their movements. Ok, fine, they can live with that. Now they want to know whats the deal with all the security. He claims to be able to show them everything at midnight. A strange statement to say the least, but they will go along. He does decide, however, that he can at least show them a few things pertaining to problem. Down a secret passage into the lower floors of the inn is a captive demon! Blackmoore claims that they are the cause of a tragedy that involves the queen of Llesendor. He pulls out a medallion and makes a claim to be a special protector of the royal family. He also wants a successor chosen from among them. There is some talk, but once again Razz cuts to the chase and suggests, no, too firm for that, orders it be given to Lars. Lars has always shown loyalty to the queen, even ahead of the Lodge. Blackmoore tosses the medallion to Lars and is visibly shaken by it. Several of them notice a distinct change in him. More then just an exchange of jewelry has taken place. He then directs them to another secret chamber. Inside is a large bronze bowl filled with water. He cuts a finger and drips it into the bowl. The bowl shows them a vision of the mirror in the Lodge being used by demons as a portal. The Bronze Knight lay in waste its totem golem destroyed and the city burning around it all. Then a portrayal of Legar, standing beside the obviously pregnant queen. He cuts her down, cleaving her almost in half. The vision ends. The group doesn't deny that they have the mirror in question, but they lack the mirror oil required to activate it. Blackmoore pulls out a vial and tosses it to Razz. Now they have it. Blackmoore is getting weaker. They ask him how long he has left. He claims to have till midnight. Near that very hour some guards bring up the demon. It is to be sacrificed to open a portal to where Morgan Verona and the group that was here two days ago went. (follow that? Heh) They are certain that the previous group were imposters and had captured Morgan. The demon had other plans and as soon as it was in the room broke free from the guards that held it and slew them. The group swings into action and quickly starts a battle. The demon is wounded severely. Then its as if a tornado struck the room. Winds violently spun, lightning arced around causing crashes of deafening thunder. The demon and Blackmoore both were being drained by the storm. The source seemed to be the bronze bowl in the middle of the room. It pulled them all into to the center of the tornado like vortex. Then all goes black. Several of them lose consciousness. Those who are alert wake the others. Blackmoore is nothing more then a dusty corpse, aged beyond simple decay. The two guards corpses are also here. The demon is gone. The group is in a chamber of immeasurable size. There are runes in the floor around them and further out are large stone columns. The corpses begin to animate and become undead. They are quickly dispatched before even standing. It is pitch black here and only a light spell grants them sight. There are runes in the floor that lead off in one direction. they begin to travel down the path. Time seems to have no meaning, and there is no way to judge distance or direction. Conn keeps them moving in the same direction. Days go by, at least they think they do. they stop to eat and drink, recasting light spells to give them sight. Conn seems the worse for wear. He scouts out ahead of them and comes back exhausted. Razz and Legar believe the group is heading in the wrong direction. Legar almost steps into oblivion, but Conn holds him back. He points out runes on the floor that seem to trace out a path that they are on. On the other side of the runes is a drop into darkness, a bottomless abyss. They go on. After a while with Conn scouting ahead they come upon him laying in the path. He is near death from cold and exhaustion. Its the light! Any time he leaves the light the darkness saps the life out of him. Spirkle tries to see what magic is causing this and nearly goes mad in the attempt. He sees the dead all around them. The spirits are flying around them from one direction (behind them) to another (ahead of them). They take no notice of their group in the light. They stay together now. Conn said that before he passed out he saw a light in the far, far distance. It's straight ahead, but who knows the distance. They travel on. Their only indications of time are the spells they cast and their length of operation. Eventually they come to an end. A light shows them a small strange being at a large book. He asks for their names. No one wants to give their real name to a being in a land of the dead. Razz steps forward and gives his name. The gnomish looking imp behind the book makes a show of looking for an entry then exclaims that Razz is not due here for some time yet. Spirkle gives his name as well and the impish thing laughs out loud at whatever it found in the book. He tells them this is the path of eternal journeys, and they do not belong here. He motions in one direction and they can see another way out. He tells them to move along. They also notice another door. A large metal affair that seems to have something on the other side of it. Whatever it is, it's trying to bash its way through the door. They all think the same thing...its after them. They move off in the other direction toward a gem inlaid hour glass nearly two feet tall. It radiates magic and seems to beckon to them to pick it up. Everyone has had enough of this temptation business and they hurry past it. There is a great column ahead and a winding stair circling it, leading ever upward. They can't see the top.
After a while climbing the open stair they hear a metallic crash below them. Soon they see a crowd of demons boiling up the stairs behind them. They increase their pace, but the stairs are becoming damp and slick. A little ways above them is a strange damp fog. Slowing down allowed the demons to catch up. There are a dozen of them, and a few of them can fly! The group is forced to fight on treacherous footing. The slightest misstep could lead to a fatal fall. Demons surround them now. Their ability to compel actions against their own party leads to several mishaps. In the end the demons are destroyed and travel continues up the stair. Around the bend is another strange little imp. He demands they sacrafice one of the group in order to pass. Ivan had produced a tiger from a totem, it is sacraficed to appease the odd imp. Then he wants to make a trade. He seems to smell gems on them. Sure enough Razz has a couple in his pouch. A small ruby is enough to purchase a strange coin that the imp assures us we will need to pay the ferryman. After passing through the fog they come upon a dock. The ferryman arrives and is paid with the coin to take us to the daemon we seek. He asks if we want the front entrance or the back. They opt for the front gate. The ferry moves through the mists and drops them off at another dock. Around a rocky, hilly path some distance away is a large gate. They watch it for a while and see a troop of 50 demons enter! A while later two riders on massive beasts leave the same gate. They all are hesitant at going up there, and understandably so. Having had enough of waiting Razz leads the way up to the gate. He tells the guards there they are after a particular daemon, and mentions it by name. The guards are a little shocked, but send them in with a guide. It's not a residence or even a keep or castle...its an entire city! A city filled with demons!
