If I understand correctly, shields absorb a point of damage, which adds to armor worn.

My objection to this is that I don't think shields work this way. They do not actually force a blow to go through them, the way that a suit of leather might. They either deflect or block a blow, or are completely avoided, and don't absorb any of the blow. (The thought of a dagger going through a shield, or the blow being slightly lessened by the attempt to get around it do not match my experiences with them.)

My solution to this is to allow shields to add 1 to Dodge instead of damage absorption. However, since there are so few ways to increase Dodge, I worry about game balance. Any thoughts on this before I try it out in play?

This is a great point Gaelethon. Actually early in development of the game, shields did just that, -they increased dodge by 1. It was changed for game balance. The (somewhat tortured) logic we settled on was that a shield, even if it didn't block directly, might decrease the effectiveness of the attacker's blow.

However, after printing, one of our members Morgannon suggested an option that I wish had made it into play-testing. Morgannon suggested that shields could absorb 1d2 - 1 points of damage, or 0-1. In fact, I mentioned this suggestion in the first issue of the WGJ.

Here's the shield rule I suggest you might try:

Buckler: Absorption: 0-1 (1d2-1), Impedance: -1
Shield: Absorption: 0-2 (1d3-1), Impedance: -2

In addition, Shield Use is now '4 skill pts x grade' with 2 grades.

I'm trying this in my own game. If it works, it will likely become Wayfarers canon. -Thanks for bringing it up. If you find another solution, or have thoughts on this one, let us know. I can promise you that we aren't ever going to massively overhaul Wayfarers. However, we are always collecting input and testing new ideas. If the time comes that we have enough of these tweaks that most people agree upon, we will run a new printing with them. Until then, we are all about playing and sharing our ideas here and in the Wayfarers Guild Journal.

I suggest combining these things.

Untrained, having a shield might as well be the same as strapping a giant piece of metal to your side, i.e., not too different from armor. Trained, it could effectively parry blows.

So maybe untrained, shields absorb 0-1. Then with Shield Use, that goes automatically to 1 and kills the impedence by 1. Then with Shield Mastery (a new discipline), it's 1 pt of absorb, 1 pt of dodge, and removes all impedence for larger shields.

The absorption aspect of shields doesn't really bother me. Maybe a more accurate ruling would be a small modifier to parry roll.

It's cool as is though

I must say I like the idea of shields adding to the dodge score, as it makes sense. It's not like you are getting hit when your shield blocks a blow, the attacker actually misses you. So dodge would be more of an appropriate state for shields to modify.

I will point out that I agree with the idea that absorption rates such as 0-1 are lame. Nobody likes rolling a 0, I mean why bother adding mechanics which slow down the game with no effect.
