Following some questions I had about the initiative system in the game, I came out with the following idea.
The character with the highest initiative score may choose between ONE of the following options:
1) acting first
2) calling a trigerred action (IF x happens, I do y)
3) delaying to 0.
So if the condition for the triggered action is not met, the character looses his round. Seems better balanced this way - there is alway the possibility the mage won't cast, so in this case he'll just spend his round "delaying" the mage - seems a fair trade and not as powerfull as always being able to interrupt. It will also make the players more involved, as they won't feel the possibility for an interrupt if you go first is totally random (someone happens to be casting at 0)
As this choice will involves just one character each round, I don't think it will make combats more tedious to run.
What do you think? Is this too powerfull? Will it lead to an arm race for better initiative scores? Does it make Agility too good a characteristic? Maybe initiative should depend on the average of Agility and Intellect for this to work better (I like this idea.)
Thanks!

I like the triggered option, actually. You'll have to let us know how it plays, but it seems like a dynamic but balanced advantage. Would the action come at the initiative following the triggering action?
Intellect/Agility is nice. Had I considered that, I might have done it.
Sounds like good Wayfarers Guild Journal material. _________________ Take a page out of the Unicorn Bible and dance all night by the Light of the Dragon's flame. -Champions of Breakfast |

That would make spells with a casting time of -1 impossible to interrupt, so I would probably rule that the action come at the same initiative as the triggering action does.
And I will probably go for the intellect/agility average. It would make the hermetic/hedge magic users less prone to be interrupted, and faith and "ritual" magic a bit slower by nature. I think it's quite flavourfull.
It would also help to distinguish a little between the slow dumb warrior and the quick thinking fighter types. |
