I've just started playing a Wayfarer's game in preparation to start my own and have come up with two things:

1. I think a player is using Backstab totally against the spirit of the game, i.e. using it midcombat, claiming "But I rolled a stealth as well as just moving behind him"

Surely backstab isn't useable midcombat unless they didnt have any clue you where there

2. How does the game deal with combat and movement?

From the description of Backstab:

Quote:
The Backstab discipline may only be used when a character
successfully surprises an opponent from behind. Simply moving behind
an opponent is not sufficient.

From the description of Stealth:

Quote:
It is impossible for a character that is under direct observation to make
a successful Stealth check. However, if line-of-sight is broken for two or
more rounds, a Stealth check may be made to avoid further detection.

So, a character attempting to use Stealth must be not be observable by the opponent for 2 full rounds before the Stealth is attempted, otherwise it will fail.

Of course, your GM should be applying penalties to the Stealth check if conditions are not optimal, i.e. the area is well-lit, the target is quickly moving about, etc.

Stealth/backstab generally won't work in combat. In order to pull it off, the character must leave combat, be sufficiently hidden for 2+ rounds, and then reenter behind the target without being observed to move around.

Hope that helps!
