Hi everyone!

I found a reference to Wayfarers that I wanted to let you know about:

http://grognardia.blogspot.com/2012/05/open-friday-niche-games.html#disqus_thread

4th post made in response (by David Nixon), specifically

While I am not sure if I would say Wayfarers meets the definition given by James Maliszewski, the comments of others indicate that there is room for debate, certainly.

Hmmm, your thoughts . . .

Interesting although I would disagree unless "niche game" is meant as "niche audience" (which, after all, includes most games other than D&D or Pathfinder).

I use Wayfarers as my system of choice to play D&D-like games which in my mind is pretty much the most mainstream application I can think of for a RPG.

In comparison, I suppose that, since the DCC RPG proposes some gimmicky (not meant to be derogatory) features (such as funneling PCs, Zocchi dice, etc), it could make it somewhat of a "niche game" by supporting a more specialized type of fantasy gaming.

On the other hand, as much as I like discussing RPGs, I think that too much energy is allocated to labelling them (clones, simulacrums, old-school, modern, heartbreakers, indie, niche, and whatnot) instead of simply playing them...

Wayfarer from what I can tell is a Niche game for the same reason that many other excellent RPG are Niche games.
Most RPGs don't have every game store owner in the country pushing their game like PathFinder & Star Wars:Edge of Empire. Maybe start a "other games" day at shops around the country. Any game could win every award in the industry and impress every one that plays it and still have no significant sales.
Also, finding players (I suspect for the same reasons as above) for new games can be difficult.

Finding players for new games is difficult. In fact, only a handful (or two) of games appear to have a wider public; D&D (one edition or the other), Pathfinder, WoD, Star Wars, and maybe a few others such as Shadowrun, Mutants and Masterminds, RuneQuest, Call of Cthulhu, Warhammer, GURPS, FATE and Savage Worlds. At least, Wayfarers keeps that familiar D&D feel which makes it easier for new players to adopt.
