I wondered for a while whether Grim and Grum were played by the same person- glad to find out it's not so!

The Crystal Chalice is a nobleman's inn. Even the Golden Quill paled in comparison. The odd companions were greeted with a notable disdain for their general character. Their paperwork from Bourgansbaine was obviously the only reason they were allowed entrance. Lad wanted everyone inside for the mission briefing. The odd wolf-like mount of Grimm was causing a problem however. They wanted Grimm to tend his own mount. Lad told the goblins to come back when they were done. A poor choice of words for the two mischief makers. After stabling their animals they went shopping. Grumm wanted to check for herbs and perhaps a unique mount of his own. Grimm also had a desire to look around town and perhaps do a little shopping. There was an herbalist with a store here and they went there first. Grumm couldn't read the various labels and the shopkeeper seemed a bit hesitant at first. Grimm therefore started reading the labels off one at a time for his brother to consider. Grumm found a few things to purchase and the shopkeeper finally started to realize he had a good sale going here. He pulled out a small pouch with 4 lonely seeds in it. “It's one gold for the pouch.” he said, indicating the prize he held. “You wont find these for sale anywhere else.” Grumm was immediately interested and inspected the few seeds offered. They were indeed worth the price. The seeds would grow into the main ingredient for the brown healing salve offered by the Alchemist guild. The next stop for the goblins was another popular (for them) haunt...a pet shop. Birds, dogs and cats made up the majority of the merchandise. Grumm wanted a giant spider. They were known to inhabit the Willow Woods to the south. The keeper thought Grumm a little off his nut for wanting something like that and could only offer the generic type of spider. Grumm purchased a dozen or so little jumping spiders. Grimm could find nothing to his liking (he's been after a monkey for some time now). Their final stop was a more general store type. Grimm wanted a telescope for scouting and Grumm bought a magnifying glass. Then they went back to the Crystal Chalice to rejoin the group...they were done now.
Back at the inn the rest of the group was shown to a suite of room that would be theirs for the night. It was beyond what any of them had imagined...well maybe Gaius had. They were told that they would be meeting Gwynneth Vernae in two hours. They were shown where to clean up. They noticed that no one at the inn was wearing armor or carrying weapons. However, being a merc group they really didn't carry fancy clothes around. A short search of the suite found noble garb for everyone. It was frilly and quite acceptable at any dress party. That being said Grombus wouldn't even consider it. Even Gaius balked at the garments provided. Lad, being leader, changed into the said clothes. It was passing odd to view the barbarian in tights and lace. Kyann and few of the others at least bathed before going downstairs (not Grombus). Lad is asked to come to the entrance of the inn. Guess who is at the door with packages stacked in front of them? Grimm and Grumm are being held up at the entrance until Lad arrives to vouch for them. They exchange a strange look as the large barbarian shows up in his new finery. Lad takes them up to the suite to unload their purchases and get cleaned up. Grumm doesn't miss a beat. He strips down to nothing and THEN walks out into the hall to go to the bath. Amidst the horrified cries of his compatriots Grumm confidently walks on into the bathing room. No one is in the hallway at the time, luckily. Grimm follows him (fully dressed however) and they clean up. Grumm puts on the fancy frills and pulls out some fancy bone jewelry to go with it. Strangely enough he pulls off the look. They are taken to a private dining room where the table is well set with breads and cheese along with wine and ale. Lady Vernae comes in to greet them and most assuredly take their measure. Her greeting goes well except that she fails to notice the lady among us, Kyann. Kyann is quite miffed at not being noticed as being the lone female of the group (or indeed the Lodge at this point). A few of the group notice that under the shawl that Lady Vernae is wearing she sports a pair of short swords. After that Lady Reynolds is introduced and they all have a good meal. The ladies all retire early and Grombus begins eyeing the ladies in the common hall. Gaius has already struck out badly there, earning a loud slap across the face. He suggests that he and the goblins take a look around. The goblins have already looked around and reported to Gaius, but Gaius seems a little edgy for some reason. It turns out he thinks its all a set up by Captain Vernae to make Gaius (and thereby the Lodge) look bad, or even be a straight out ambush by Captain Vernae himself. Such noble guests would be staying at the manor with Mayor Kael Arenson. So the three of them fade off into the shadows of the night. Well the goblins fade off, Gaius doesnt fade so well and is caught crossing the main garden of the manor house. The guard confronts him and Gaius, thinking quickly, grabs up a handful of flowers and pretends to be making amends with a female. The guard buys it and with a small bribe lets Gaius go. The goblins are on their own now. They go on to the stable and find nothing out of the ordinary. Grimm wants to get the coins back for Gaius but the opportunity just doesn't present itself. They do decide to have a little fun though. They tell Gaius that Captain Vernae's horse and several other Bourgansbaine steeds are at the mayors private stable. Gaius takes the bait hook, line and sinker. Now fully paranoid, he's concerned about the cargo.
Breakfast is being had the next morning when Grimm notices the looks on the patrons faces while we dine. He makes a acrobatic display and plops down in the chair next to them just to say “Hi”. He claims to only be visiting them on account of their obvious interest in our group. The strangers are horrified to say the least. Lad quickly retrieves Grimm, almost bodily picking him up and pulling him away, apologizing as he goes. Finally the small caravan is on its way and the first three days of travel see little happen. Gaius is constantly looking around and behind them for the supposed trap to be sprung and Grimm and Grumm have trouble containing their mirth at his behaviour.
They arrive at the fortified inn (we never did get a name for that place) and settle for the night. Gaius tries to make small talk with the guards around the wagon we are escorting. There are four guards and two of them are on duty at all times. Gaius is told to go back to his room. Grimm is in the rafters however making good of Gaius's distraction. A few magic spells later and he knows exactly what they are guarding. It sets off a firestorm of debate. It takes four large horses to pull the wagon so they know its heavy. There are several barrels of a black sandy substance and a couple with small round metal balls. The bales of “clothe” are wrapping up many guns of various types. They are guarding a kings ransom in firearms. Grimm is crawling back across the rafter when he is spotted and almost skewered by the crossbow bolt. It lands inches from his face. He shouts out quickly “Dang it! You scared off the pigeon!” The guards order everyone back to their rooms and away from the cargo. They wisely take the order quietly. The pay they were offered suddenly seems inordinately low compared to the service being performed. Who knows what the laws are considering the amount of firepower they are transporting. Of everyone only Grumm seems unconcerned. Gaius is more certain then ever that its all a trap (mainly for him of course). Lad and Gaius quietly confront Lady Gwynneth the next morning about the concerns of the group of the nature of the cargo without letting on that they already know whats in it. A trickly line to walk, but they manage. They aren't certain either of the Ladies know whats actually in there, but Lady Vernae knows for a certainty that it must arrive safely.
The days travel sees a shift in everyones normal positions...the wagon is given a wide berth by most. Grumm has been getting along well with both the escorted ladies and rides between them making conversation most naturally it seems. Grombus is very annoyed with this as his own efforts with those two ladies hasn't really amounted to much (but then he wasn't really trying he was too busy scouting)
It pays to have him scouting too, he spots a strange rider in the distance following them (a warg mounted goblin actually). They look for a suitable place that night to camp, but nothing presents itself as being very defensible. With the sighting of the follower they are fairly certain they will be attacked in the night. They press on a little to find a better campsite. A rather tense night passes with nothing unwanted happening.
Morning arrives and since nothing happened Grombus uses a clairvoyance spell to spy out the goblin from yesterdays sighting. A wonderful move as it reveals an ambush set for us a half a days ride north. Kyann uses her falcon and a spell that allows her to share its sight to further scout the area. Between the two of them they sketch out whats ahead. A group of goblins is at a small bridge over a deep streambed in the road. They decide to go ahead and deal with the ambush when it arrives. Kyanns thoughtful use of air visibility saves them from a nasty surprise. About a quarter mile away from the bridge she finds another group (gnolls and even a demon!) waiting to close the trap behind them. The wagon is stopped and someone casts a shielding spell that leaves a glowing aura around them. The ambushers must have keen eyes because they saw the cast and spring the trap! The battle begins and the opposing force comes out of hiding. There are 2 ogres on the other side of the bridge along side the goblins. There are five melee goblins and 3 archers and of course our buddy the warg rider. On the ridge are another 5 warriors (gnoles this time) and 4 more archers (also gnoles). The ridge group also contains a dark elf, a goat like demon and a nasty demonic looking gnole.
The caravan is shot with arrows first and then bolts forward. Those on the outside of the group head for the goblins and ogres to clear the path. The driver for the wagon is shot but the horses hold steady racing across the bridge. Grumm stays with the two ladies until they are all across. Then he turns and calls on the earth to slow their attackers. The very rocks themselves shoot upward forming knife like projections that would slow any crossing them down to a crawl (unless they wanted to but cut up on the jagged rocks) Unfortunately this catches a few of the group inside the spells area, but just on its edge. The charging gnoles are quickly halted and arrows begin to fly. Grumm calls on the elements again with wind this time causing much difficulty for the archers. The goblins and ogres are wiped out quickly. The warg rider tries to run away by going under the bridge (his warg was already cut down by Talon, but Grimm is already there and the goblin does not emerge the victor. The demons and dark elf call the gnoles back in retreat and the group has a second to take stock. The wagon driver is dead and one of the horses has gone down for some reason. Do they try to flee or brace for an attack?

Everyone does so much around the table its hard to remember everything. I take notes, but its not an exact transcript of course. If I missed something I am sorry. Let me know and I can edit things, or if you want more detail on actions remind me of events and I can expand on them!

It was decided to use Lad's horse to replace the fallen draft horse. The enemy had moved beyond the ridge and when Grombus went to scout them out they were gone. The last impression he got from them was by spell and he only got “keep moving we have to get in position”, and then they were out of range. The small caravan moved on for half a day and then needed to stop. The horses were exhausted and the party had its wounds to tend. Grumm used some of his magic to help the draft horses recover. Others were healed and then the group settled down for the night. One hour after going to sleep they were attacked. Gaius used his firearm to shoot at the enemy gnoles. This served very well to wake everyone up. The demons, dark elf and gnoles are back. The camp scrambles to get into defensive positions. Turok hears a vile whisper in his mind, “Serve me!” and is overwhelmed by one of the demons. He is ordered to capture the “girl”, there are 3 in the caravan so he tries to capture the nearest one. With the arrows flying and the attack pressing in, no one but Grumm sees Turok try to capture Elenor. It ends badly for Turok, his bumbling attempt to grab Elenor fails miserably and he winds up five feet away prone on the ground. Elenor, it seems, can take care of herself. Grumm has very little magic left, but enough to keep Turok busy. Grumm releases many of the spiders he bought and corrupts them. The now 2 feet across jumping spiders harrass Turok for the rest of the fight keeping him occupied. Gaius used some superior positioning skills sneak up behind the greater demon and deliver a devastating back stab. The greater demon turned on Gaius and cast a fear spell on him. Gaius was forced to flee. It was looking rather grim (not the other goblin either) for the caravan. Most of their magic was used up and no one had had much chance to rest. Then the calvary arrived! Well it was infantry actually. It was Seldzar. He had been tracking the dark elf in the enemy party for some time. It was the groups lucky day when Seldzar caught up to his quarry during the fight. With the addition of fresh troops the enemy crumbled. The enemy dark elf escaped, but not before being badly wounded.
Seldzar sends his men after the escapee and then accompanies the caravan back to Bourgansbaine at Gaius's suggestion. The caravan finishes out the night resting and sets out the next day. Its late evening when the group arrives at Bourgansbaine. They are taken to the guards compound immediately. Captain Preston Vernae arrives to debrief the group and tell them they have rooms at the Golden Quill waiting on them. They are told they have been invited to a formal dinner at the mayors mansion the next evening. Kyann asks Preston to escort her to the occasion but he declines. Gaius wants to wear his armor and weapons and is turned down as well. There is some little argument of what constitutes proper dinner attire.
The group retires to the Golden Quill. Gaius asks Cathrine (the proprietor of the Quill) if Glenda may have the night off tommorow to accompany him to the party. Gaius also pays 3 gold to have a dress made for her. Grombus takes another maid, Ilene, at Cathrines suggestion.
The next morning a messenger happens to find Turok and informs him that the lord mayor wishes to see the group in the mayors office. When the group arrives Gwynneth, Elenor, Captain Vernae, Mayor Reynolds and the royal courier that was disguised as a caravan guard were all waiting on the group. The mayor praises the group and offers an apology for the deception regarding the importance and contents of the caravan. He hands over the agreed upon pay for the job and then pushes forward a group of 10 gold as a bonus. He also gives the group a 6 foot box...inside is a custom made musket. Another smaller box has a powder horn and 10 shot for the musket. Gaius introduces Seldzar to the mayor. Those who were in the caravan vouch for Seldzars character and help. Then Gaius proceeds to try once again to wear armor and weapons to the dinner. The mayor shuts him down pretty fast. Questioning his skills if he has to rely on armor and weapons at a simple dinner event.
The event that evening started with the guests gathering in the hall. The goblins are well received especially Grumm. Gaius blended in with the nobles completely, he was at least as noble and polite as any of them. (The whole group was surprised). A gong sounds and dinner is served in the dining hall. Everyone files in and is seated. Lord Mayor Renolds and his daughter are announced as well as Captain Preston Vernae and his sister Gwynneth. The mayor publicly thanks the Lodge of the Bronze Knight for its valor in service. He introduces the entire nobility to Seldzar as a friendly representitive of the dark elf race. This causes many whispers throughout the hall. He also announces the engagement of his daughter Elenor and Captain Vernae. A few of the group notice that Elenor Reynolds is not at all happy with this. She does not like the good captain at all. After dinner is a dance. Gaius makes nicey nice with Captain Preston and Grumm annoys the captain by cutting in during the dance. Grumm and Elenor became good friends over the trip, they are both priests of Vorn and wear Symbols of the Tree. Elenor is grateful to her friend. Grimm uses the dance to look around the mansion. He gets a good wander and a decent idea of the layout of the mansion. There is magic about the place and he is fairly sure there are secrets hidden around. Captain Preston reclaims his bride to be, but not before Grumm quite loudly announces his intent to return to continue the conversations of the road. Elenor says she would enjoy that very much. Captain Preston is actually jealous of the goblin! Gaius is also amused and impressed, the goblin did more to annoy Preston the all the arguments he has had with Preston so far.
Kyann gets in on the act as well and projects a thought into Prestons mind “You can do much better then that little girl.” Captain Preston reacts to the message by talking to some of the guards on duty. They began to look around the party. Other information garnered that evening include the parents of Preston and Gwynneth Vernae are nobles in Turth. Captain Preston pulled some political strings to garner a post here in Bourgansbaine. Why he did this is still unknown. There are five major noble families around Bourgainsbaine and several more minor ones. Seldzar reveals the cambion priestess leading the cult goes by the name Mistriss Ilia.
The party is finally over and everyone returns to their respective homes. Kyann finds out the following day that the regular patrol that the group should have met on its way home had gone missing, most likely due to the demons, gnoles and goblins the group dispatched. It was no wonder the roads seemed empty as they traveled. Comparing notes they can see that Captain Preston is quite ambitious, but his goals remain a mystery. Its all pretty much over for this mission, however. The loot sold in town and goods gathered up for the trip back to River Watch will see the group back to their keep once again.

PostPosted: Sat Oct 09, 2010 4:42 pm    Post subject: a little harmless research? Reply with quote

It has been a couple of days since the dinner party at the mayor's mansion. Everyone headed back to River Watch. Grumm had an idea to check on Captain Vernae's family background in the library in Bourgansbaine. After spreading the word he was headed to town a sizable group formed to accompany him. Grumm, Gaius, Turok, Lad, Grimm and Grombus all head back into town. Most of the group heads straight for the Golden Quill. Grimm and Grumm look around town a bit before supper. All seems quite that night in town. The goblins find out that Mayor Reynolds has gone to Avenaigh for royal court and will be gone for nine or ten weeks. He took four calvary, 5 infantry and a few retainers with him.
With the mayor gone, Gaius's paranoia kicks into high gear. He is sure Captain Vernae is planning something. Unfortunately he makes a good argument. Grombus uses a guide spell to track down Preston. Grimm follows along, but the two do not travel together. They arrive seperately at a small gated house. They climb over the wall at two different areas and begin their individual plans. Grombus casts some spells to gain information about those inside the house and a spell that changes him into a bush to hide himself. Grimm relies purely on stealth. When the lights all go out Grimm goes in an open window. He makes a fairly thorough search of the house and Preston is nowhere to be found. He does find a letter in Irindi in the study, but he doesn't know the language. He also finds a set of magical chain mail. Outside he spots someone else watching the house from a nearby rooftop. He later finds out that Grombus also spotted someone up there. After leaving the house and climbing the roof there is no sight of anyone being there. Grimm decides to take up the post himself to wait on Preston to return. Grombus makes it rain for a while, soaking Grimm.
While they were busy spying, Grumm paid a visit to Lady Elenor at the mayors mansion. He was let in right away. Lady Elenor and Grumm had formed an unlikely but strong friendship during their trip. They were both priest of Vorn and bore symbols of the tree giving them something in common. They talk late into the night. Elenor gives Grumm a letter to use at the library to help him with his research. Grumm does conceal the truth about his interests saying only that he wishes to know more about Bourgansbaine and its noble families.
Back at the Quill; Lad, Gaius and Turok are enjoying the evening. Gaius, captain of the scouts, tries to get Turok to go out and scout about town. Turok refuses and reminds Gaius that he was kicked out of the scouts for not following Gaius into the gnole camp. Gaius lets it pass but has a short talk with one of the staff at the bar. As the evening wears on, Lad and Gaius notice that Turok is getting quite drunk. They all notice that there are several people trying to listen in on their conversation. Gaius trys to stir things up by insulting Lad and Turok. Hoping to start a fight for a diversion, he tries many tactics. Nothing works the two are calm as could be and refuse to take offense. Those out and about finally return to the Golden Quill around midnight. Turok has passed out, probably from the extra strong drinks he was being served at Gaius's request. Gaius wants Lad to help him carry Turok outside to the horses water trough. Lad will have nothing to do with the practical joke. Grumm on the other hand is more then happy to help, and even supplies a white paint to circle Turok's eyes with. It's the wee hours when Turok is woken up by a guard. He finds himself laying in the water with no memory of how he got there. The guard asks him if he has a room at the Quill and if so he should go back inside.
Morning comes and Gaius recieves a private message. Grumm heads to the library to do some research. It should be noted that Grumm can't read. His familiar, a gremlin named Grumby, does this for him. Grumby is quite intelligent and has served Grumm for many years. Upon arriving at the library Grumm shows the note that Elenor gave him to the librarian, brother Larik. He is shown to the archives and assisted in researching the major noble families of Bourgansbaine. In order to make the research look legitimate Grumm researches not just the Vernae family but also Reynolds and Lockridge (Cathrine at the Golden Quill). Vernae is linked to Turth, which they already knew. It is found out that Preston, a half elf, has two brothers that are full elves and they are older then he. Given their lifespan he is very unlikely to inherit anything from his father. There is mention of a daughter, but no mention of Gwennyth in particular (Preston's sister). After the research Grumm acquires some new spiders for his collection to replace those that Turok killed. Then he goes to the mayors office to check in on Elenor and thank her for the help with his research. When he arrives Gwynneth and Preston are already there with Elenor. Grumm is polite and inquires about the day to day business that Elenor must attend to while her father is away. Captain Preston becomes bored and eventually leaves. Grumm makes a remark about Preston being a bore himself. Gwynneth has a wry smirk for the remark and Elenor just looks releived that Preston is gone. Grumm does find out that the cavalry was almost entirely recruited by Preston. Grumm has to leave Elenor to her duties soon after that and she remarks that she will see him later at dinner with the others.
Lad receives just such an invitation for the group to dine at the mayors manner that evening. This is to be an informal event. Gaius puts up funds for a public party outside the Golden Quill. He spends 20 gold to have the event. Cathrine will take care of all the details. The dinner that evening is nice. Gwynneth and Elenor greet the party as they arrive. The dinner is Elenor's way of personally thanking us for her and Gwynneths' safe return. It is interrupted once by Captain Preston, who barges in and dismisses all of the servants. He claims to have been unaware that Elenor had dinner guests. Grimm makes a couple of barbed remarks about Prestons not being at his own house the previous night. Captain Vernae pretty much ignores the jab. He does comment on Grumms library visit though, and then excuses himself. The tension in the room eases noticeably after Preston leaves. Towards the end of dinner Gaius invites the ladies to the Golden Quill for the party. The ladies politely decline.
Their dinner at an end the group heads back to the Golden Quill. Grimm peals off from the group to try to track down Preston.
The party is in two parts. The public party is limited to the outside of the Golden Quill. There is a more private party on the inside. There are bouncers keeping the two seperate. Gaius and Lad attend the party. Kyan changes clothes to less formal wear then attempts to smuggle some of the outside guests into the private party. It doesn't work. Turok walks around the party outside but does not drink. Grombus hangs around Ilene (one of the waitresses at the Quill that he has been quite taken with) Lad wanders around the entire party, much the...social barbarian?
Grimm tracks Preston back to his house. He climbs up and enters through Preston's bedroom window. His movements are silent, but it makes little difference it seems as the bed and room appear to be empty. He looks around and hears a strangely accented voice from just behind him. Out of the darkness emerges a figure. The voice sounds more like the dark elves then the half elven Preston. The surprise is costly. The figure gestures and incants a frigid beam into existance. The beam strikes Grimm sending a biting freeze across his body. Grimm is severely wounded and only his acrobatics save him as he rolls out the window. Another spell follows, a forcebolt impacts Grimm as he moves across the wall and flees into the alley.
Meanwhile Gaius has slipped away from the party with no one the wiser. He stealthily makes his way to a hidden place and is met by a secret guard. He is led then to a meeting with a contact he has made before (the potion!) The door is locked and he and the stranger begin to discuss things. The stranger 's identity is hidden. Gaius reveals all of the information the group has uncovered. He has a rapport with the mysterious voice it seems. He directs Gaius to look to the Rookroost forest to continue his search. He is told that the sister can be trusted and a package was delivered to the mayor. The he tosses a pouch to Gaius. Inside is a coin with a black rose on one side and mysterious symbols on the other. Gaius is instructed to use it only if absolutely necessary. He will know the time if it arises.
Grimm finds Grombus and asks to be healed. Grimm is going back, he will have his revenge. Grumm goes with him and one other...Lad decides he wants to see what the goblins do when they disappear. They slide into the darkness and back to Prestons house. Grimm climbs back up into the bedroom and enters once more through the window. Lad boosts Grumm up to look into the window. As Grimm looks around for the dark elf he finds instead Preston Vernae in bed and asleep as he should be. Grumm sees Preston and casts a hex spell on him, perhaps in revenge for the rude dinner interruption. Grimm slips back out and they head back to the party. Lad is not sure, but his gut tells him that Preston might have met a messy end had he not gone along. Grombus hears the tale and casts a spell to try to find the dark elf, whom they think is the same that attacked them with the demons and gnoles. The spell works and he takes off for the south gate almost unnoticed. Grimm sees him go and follows. The others seem to be distracted by something at the party.
A large man in a smith's apron has approached Turok and proposes a contest. A fisticuffs match for the party goers to enjoy. Turok is game and they clear an area outside. There is some betting even among the group and not all of the for Turok. The match continues for a short time, they are fairly evenly matched. Turok wins.
Grombus and Grimm track the dark elf to the great river east of Bourgansbaine. It appears the the dark elf flew across the river, sprouting wings or by spell. They head back to the inn and wake Lad to brief him on what they found. Grombus wants to go after Preston, believing him to be behind it all. Gaius, Lad, Grombus and Grimm go over the evidence gathered so far. Gaius reveals the Rookroost lead, but not its source or the coin. Grombus and Gaius both make many attempts to get Lad to go challenge Preston and kill him. Lad and Grimm want to go after the dark elf. Where do we go next?

Yeah, seriously. Sometimes the giant caravan of black powder doesn't have to explode, you know? Kind of like how not every ship PCs get on has to burn and sink. Maybe just our games, Swill.

...

One thing I enjoy about reading these excerpts is the emphasis on social interaction- the Lodge is definitely a part of society, with PCs having to go to parties and such. Adds a sense of the real.

For this little adventure we have to go back in time two days to just after the primary group left for Bourgansbaine. A man is spotted approaching River Watch at a rather odd pace. He appears to be stumbling, perhaps drunk or wounded. The guard on watch at the time is Eldren. He leaves his post on the wall to alert others and investigate the stranger. It turns out to be a older man named Niles. His clothes are torn and there is blood all over his arm. It's obvious he has been in a fight. His first concern is to ask for Jye. Niles worked for master Jaffry, the pet store owner. Jaffry had actually found an animal that Jye (a 9 foot tall ogre) could use as a mount. Niles described a strange beast six or seven feet tall, grey, weighing several tons, and having a nose that stretched clear to the ground! He called it an elephant, and said it was not yet at its full growth. The caravan he was with was bringing this beast as well as food and supplies that regularly were delivered to River Watch. The caravan had been attacked by gnoles earlier that morning. Niles managed to escape and came here. He must have just missed the other group that was headed towards Bourgansbaine.
Jye, Abaddon, Kruger, Eldren, Hrothgar, and Niles (after his wounds are tended) head north to a river crossing where they find some tracks. Among the footprints of the gnoles are set of huge indentations in the ground almost a foot across. It must be from the elephant Niles described. No one in the group had heard of such a beast and up until now thought it something the man made up, perhaps as a result of a blow to the head. They all cross the river and follow the tracks until late afternoon. They find a pile of dung that put any horse to shame. The tracks are heading east into the lowland plains. As evening encroaches upon them they begin to hear a loud trumpeting sound. Niles says that is the elephant. They walk for another hour(!) before they find the source of the noise.
The camp of gnoles is set up around a large fire. The elephant is bound to a large tree by one of its back legs and another rope ties one of its front legs to a great spike in the ground. There are two men laying unconscious not far from the center of camp. Before they left Jye had put the finishing touches on his suit of full plate. It was probably the best work he had ever done and he was eager to try it out. Jye wasted no time and simply started walking straight towards the gnole encampment.
The gnoles demanded ransom for their prisoners, but the group wasn't there to negotiate. The attack was swift and fierce. The group felled 9 of the gnoles in short order. The rest fled. They healed the two men. One was the animal handler for the elephant, Fetu. The spoils of the fight were loaded onto the two stolen wagons (the supplies were still there). The elephants name was Mauk. Fetu said that elephants were quite intelligent and this one was still young despite its great size. Fetu was to stay and help Jye train the beast. Master Jaffry included this in the price. Fetu also has a book about the elephants for Jye.
The next day they head back to River Watch and find out that Vlad has returned. The group goes straight to Vlad to inform him of a troubling find among the gnoles leaders belongings. It is a coin that has a symbol of a two headed eagle on it. It's the main symbol of the Vernae coat of arms. An extremely odd possession for a gnole. They bring Vlad up to date on happenings up till now, and tell him that the other group had left yesterday morning to do some more investigating. Its now later into the night and Vlad decides to send them on to Bourgansbaine to gather the others and whatever information they have found out. This secondary group leaves early the next morning.

As the secondary group is leaving River Watch, the primary group is discussing its options. They have had additional information from a contact. There were twelve cloaked riders leaving the north gate late in the night. They are certain this is an ambush for the Lord Mayor. If the mayor had turned around from the previous messages that Grombus sent then there would be trouble. If the mayor continued on towards the capitol then he would be safe. Grombus sent another message to the priest he had contacted before. It came back bad news, the mayor had turned around and was heading back into ambush. Grombus sends another message to the mayor directly. The mayor can't respond, but is forewarned at least. The group immediately leaves to pursue the northern bound riders.

Its a few hours after noon when Jye's group arrives in Bourgansbaine. They missed the other group by just a few hours, but won't be aware of that for a bit. Jye heads to master Jaffry to pay for the elephant. Master Jaffry gives him a discount for the trouble with the gnoles. They then head for the Golden Quill where they expect to find the other group. Cathrine greets them as they arrive and informs them the others left around noon, but left a journal (from Grumby, Grums gremlin familiar). Cathrine was to give the journal to anyone from the lodge that arrived. Vlad had been very specific. The group was to go to Bourgansbaine and bring back any evidence as quickly as possible. The journal contained all the information about the ambush and the evidence gathered so far (see previous posts!). Jye did not allow anyone to rest. They turned around and headed back to River Watch that same hour, and arrive late that night.

The primary group is riding hard northward. They are all getting tired and Grum's horse comes up lame. Grombus heals the horse and they continue onward. They find two sets of great cat tracks crossing their path. Grim and Grum want to pursue the cats, but Lad holds them on course toward the cloaked riders. They think they are 6 to 8 hours behind them. It is after dark when they hear something ahead on the road. They stop well out of sight. Just as Lad asks for scouts, Grim and Grum both vanish into the darkness and move to scout ahead. Lad makes a remark about never wanting to be on the wrong side of those two. In the middle of the road ahead are 30 short humanoid figures (kobolds according to Grim). They are around a horse and two humans on the ground. The leader of the gnoles wants to kill them, but some of his group are arguing. The leader is insistant and the goblins rush back to the group. Grim and Grum tell Lad what they found and about the need for fast action before the captives are killed. Oh and the captives clothes have the markings of Bourgansbaine on them. Lad gives the order and they head up the road to confront the warlike kobolds.

After the goblins returned and told the others they only had a few minutes before the two prisoners were executed there were a couple of spells cast to prepare. Grim's hybrid wolf and Grombus's pet cougar were corrupted and placed at their owners command. A green man and an earth elemental were summoned. Then the group moved forward, some among the vegetation of the forest and others walked straight up the road. The kobolds were caught off guard. The group was moving forward at a walk and the threat of an all out attack seemed to cow the kobolds. They were outmatched and knew it. The group asked for the prisoners and were granted them. The kobolds drug the dead horse a little ways up the road and began to butcher it. While the others tended to the unconscious former prisoners, Grum saw the kobolds were doing a horrible job cutting up the horse carcass and volunteered his expertise in butchery to aid them. Grum was busy, most of the others were caring for the captives, and this left Grim with nothing to do...So he headed off into the woods to see if he could find traces of the big cats whose tracks they had seen earlier. After moving off into the woods quite a ways he started making sounds like a sheep “Baaaaa”. He crept along making bleating noises hoping to attract one of the cats when he hit the jackpot. A lion's head broke through the bushes just ahead of him. Excellent! Perfect! Just what he wanted...and then a goat's head pushed through...and a snakes head rose above...a chimaera. His “baaaa” quickly turned into “Oh crap.” and Grim and his wolf mount bolted back towards the camp. The chimaera unleashed blistering fire at Grim, scorching his wolf mount terribly. Speed was on Grim's side though and he lost the chimaera in the woods and came screaming back into camp. At his story the rest of the group went to defensive positions anticipating the coming attack. The kobolds must have heard as well because they vanished. The attack didn't come, however, and the group assumed the chimaera was not willing to attack such a large party.
The news from the former captives was grim. Once healed they spun a story straight out of nightmare. One was a retainer (Dalton Phelps) and the other a soldier (Derick) from Lord Mayor Reynolds group. They had been attacked by 12 riders, 2 plate armored demons 7' tall, and a couple of shadowy figures. They killed 4 of the infantry and 2 other retainers before taking the mayor captive and leaving these two for dead. Before they lost consciousness they heard the master of the ambush tell the others “Take him to the safe house and wait.”
The group searched around for tracks and found two sets leaving the area. One set (all riders) headed southwest back towards Bourgansbaine. The other (mixed riders and walkers) headed west, deeper into the Rookroost forest. It was decided that the group should rest. They wanted to be at full spell strength when they faced their opponent and it was getting very dark very quickly. They set their guards for the night watch and the others went to sleep. No sooner were the first of them sound asleep when the chimaera attacked. It had been waiting for a more vulnerable time to attack. Shouts roused the sleepers and the battle began. The first target was the donkey that Grum rides, and yes Grum almost lost his ass. (and a plethora of other jokes followed) The chimaera was a fierce fighter, but it was alone and the group was more then a match for it. Grum was overjoyed at the kill. He began taking trophies and carving up the corpse as soon as it hit the ground almost.
The group follows the set of tracks leading west. Some of them can feel the ill magic that pervades the Rookroost forest. Its not long before the ill magic makes itself known. The group is attacked by treants. Huge willow like treants grab up Gaius and he dissappears into the branches. The group attacks the walking trees in an effort to save their kidnapped comrade. The treants fall, but cost the party a few of its magic spells. Just ahead of them is another challenge. A section of ruin wall partly conceals a golem made of bone and plant. Once again they attack to clear the way. The tracks led them here. The golem, they figure, must be guarding some entrance of some sort. The golem doesn't last long under their determined assault. Grum started collecting small bones from the downed golem. The others found a cellar entrance of some sort. They start down into the underground passage. They run into trouble right away. The tunnel is covered in a darkness spell. Only another spell will counter it and let them see. The illuminate spell is simple enough to cast but it means one less spell for the caster.
No sooner do they enter the corridor then soldiers swarm out from behind a corner. Among them is a large demon wearing plate. They can hear casting from a room beyond the corner. The demon facing them has a glowing blue sword. It cuts right through their armor. The enemy was expecting them and made preparations. The corridor made for cramped fighting, but it soon spilled out into the room. Summoned and corrupted spiders made for a good diversion even if they couldn't penetrate the armor. The other demon waited in the back room. The first one fell to Gaius's blades. (he has made quite a reputation as a demon slayer by getting the final attack, usually from behind)
The soldiers were aided by bow wielding dark elves. A pair of casters one hermetic and one faith assailed the group from the far corner. Grum and Grim sent their spiders to harass the enemy casters.
The rescued soldier, Derick, cut through the traitorous soldiers one after another. Turok and Gaius also felled several, while Grombus called forth a djinn in answer to the avatar summoned by the enemy priest. Grum sent his invisible familiar Grumby (a gremlin) to attack the enemy casters. Kyanne fired off a lightning bolt through a line of enemies. They crumbled. The priest drug the unconscious mage through a door in the back of the room. Everyone heard the heavy bar slide down on the other side. Grum had a solution. One of his final spells shattered the wooden door and the rest of the group flooded into the room to finish off the last two enemies. There were more surprises in store for the group. As expected they found mayor Reynolds on a cot in the room. He was out cold. The biggest surprise though was laying in the next cot. It was Preston Vernae. His body was rail thin and the growth of his beard was telling evidence that he had lain here for a long time. There was at least one imposter loose in Bourgansbaine. The second surprise was a large silver mirror. A reveal enchantment spell told the group that it was a portal of some sort. Where it led no one knew, although the goblins were for finding out right away. (it's impossible to curb their impetuousness.) Time was not on their side. This was a large and complicated operation. Demons, dark elves and traitorous men were all involved in a power play for Bourgansbaine. The city was in great peril, but what to do to stop it?

Wow. Happily caught up again. Things are getting intense too, eh? This group packs some punch.

I do love Grum and Grim. It was nice to see a likely fight with the kobolds turn into a friendly butchery lesson from Grum. The Chimera was hilarious too.

Mayor Reynolds and the real captain Vernae lay on cots in the back of the room. On the side of the room stood the door-sized silver mirror. Reynolds was unconscious but not near death as the pathetic figure of Preston Vernae was. A short discussion was inevitable.
“We could end this all right here.” Gaius proposed.
“What do you mean?” asked Lad.
“We could run the whole town after saving it from the imposters, we would be heroes!” continued Gaius.
“No.” Lad affirmed.
“But...” Gaius countered
“No.” Lad reaffirmed.
Gaius tried to go on with his proposal and Lad would deny him. The others were too busy with the conversation to notice the goblins had gone through the mirror. They were sneaky little devils and had slipped through while the conversation was on the mayor and Preston. It was about 10 minutes later and the entire group was getting involved with the debate when Gaius finally figured out they were short a couple of goblins. “Did anyone see where the goblins went?” he asked.
“Ah crap.” was all Lad could come up with.
They all turned towards the giant mirror in the corner and about that time there was a ripple on its surface, as if someone had dropped a pebble into water.
Backing up a little bit. The goblins tiptoed around their fellow adventures and slid quietly through the mirror. They were not in the least bit interested in having a talk about who would run some human town. The mirror on the other hand led to somewhere unknown and that was interesting. On the other side of the mirror was a 50' square chamber with one door on the opposite wall. It had sleeping mats and pillows for several people. There was a desk and some papers as well as an altar..to Typhon! So the Typhons had never left town after all. It only took the three (if you count Grum's familiar Grumby) of them a few minutes to tear the room apart. They found very little. They ruined the altar (no vulgar details but its definitely spoiled), and took a Typhon bible as a gift for Kruger to destroy later. They then turned their attention to the door. It was locked, but not for long. It could also be barred from this side. The two goblins went on past the door into a long dark tunnel. They left Grumby in the room to tell the others (if they ever came through) where they went. They explored a series of dark tunnels to discover they were back in Bourgansbaine! There were secret entrances to several buildings including the Kithain church, the glass blowers shop, the mayors office, and Preston Vernae's mansion.
A light shown behind them, someone had stepped through the mirror and opened the door. The light shown down the tunnel and by the shadow in the door they thought it must be Turok. Foot steps echoed through the tunnels. Turok realized that the light from the door was a dead giveaway so he shut the door again. The goblins had no trouble hiding in the shadows from the humans that came down the corridor. There were three of them. One they recognized very clearly, it was the glass blower Terrik Pool. The other two were guards of some sort. They passed the goblins without discovering them.
The rest of the group came through the mirror and the goblins let them in on where they were now...eventually, they were kinda busy exploring. The entire group heard the church bells ring out. They thought perhaps they rang to honor the mayors supposed death. They set out to the basement of the church of Kithain. Inside the church was a wedding ceremony for the fake Preston and Elenor Reynolds. There were about 18 of the handpicked soldiers backing up the imposter.
The group wasted no time and quickly rushed in to attack. They were outnumbered and the guards were well trained. The priest turned on the group as well, summoning an avatar of Typhon. The imposter was also a formidable opponent. In the end all but 8 of the traitorous guards were slain.
Gwynneth, Elenor's personal guard, was found unconscious in the mayor's manor house.
The story was pieced together finally. Twelve years ago the real Preston Vernae had left to recruit a calvary for Bourgansbaine. He was gone a year. The doppelganger must have gotten to him then. The imposter returned with 18 elite calvary and 32 regular calvary. The 18 were in on the scam the others were ignorant of it. About 5 years ago Gwynneth was sent to investigate her brothers actions (actually the doppelganger's) under the guise of being Elenor's bodyguard. She was sent by the royal spy network.
While the story is being put together, Eldron, a scout from River Watch, arrives in Bourgansbaine and finds the group. His news is dire. An army of gnolls some 150 strong have laid siege to River Watch!
Gaius takes it the hardest. All this time suffering an imposters insults and harrasment and all he had to do to end it was one knife in the back and become a hero. He went to the Golden Quill to get drunk. Gaius passed out and Turok, took him out and through him in the water trough.
Morning sees the group head out the south gate. They are met by a surprise force of Bourgansbaine soldiers! Volunteers to aid River Watch for all the things that the Bronze Knight has done for the town were assembled. 12 calvary and 75 footmen as well as the real Preston Vernae and Lord Blackmoor and his personal guard. The group moved to the head of the column and moved out towards River Watch. When they arrived they faced an almost equal force. The remaining garrison at River Watch had held them off quite handily. The enemy was made up of 5 different tribes and each of the 5 leaders had a golden coin with the partial seal of the Vernae family. Losses were total among the gnolls and minimal for the rescuers. The Bourgansbaine chapterhouse has grown quite strong since its humble beginnings.
A couple of weeks go by and a contingent of Bourgansbaine soldiers arrive at the gate to River Watch. They have a request from the mayor for the entire group of adventurers to appear at a grand ball in their honor. There are 14 members that attend the ball. They are housed at the Golden Quill and picked up in coaches to attend the celebration. All the noble houses of Bourgansbaine are in attendance as well as one noble guest from the royal court. He is Sir Axle Krouse part of the kingdoms spy network. The mayor introduces a new Kithain priest, friar Bernard Culbert, to replace the Typhon upstart that was killed. The Lodge members are offered honorary knighthood for their deeds. Preston Vernae as his first formal act makes the soldier Derrik an officer.
The group that actually performed the rescue was taken aside by the Mayor Reynolds and Captain Vernae to award them a small monetary sum, 10 gold each! They were also given a fancy symbol of their new station, a ring. They were told the tunnels were filled and sealed (the goblins were heartbroken) and that there were 3 unaccounted for enemies. Terrik Poole and his two guards were missing. They knew that Poole was a Typhon ritual caster and that they had a two week headstart. They wanted to hire the Lodge to bring them back. A new contract was made. One gold each for their return, a bonus if its alive, and reasonable expenses.
Vlad convenes a meeting of the lodge at the Golden Quill, specially rented for their sole use for the evening. Vlad opens the floor for any business needing his attention from his absence. Jye speaks up wanting Gaius reprimanded for his poor behavior with the mayor and the imposter Preston. He claims it endangered the Lodge's business dealing with the town and sowed discontent and infighting among the Lodge members. Its a long drawn out argument. Gaius objects at every turn, claiming it was all part of his “plan”. He pushes Lad too far finally with personal insults and Lad bodily takes him outside and beats the hell out of him. Gaius winds up verbally reprimanded as well. Afterwards its all good, Gaius knew he pushed too hard...on all fronts. The meeting done and all local matters settled it was time to journey to Llesendor for the grand lodge meeting. All members were to attend. Since the reforming of the Lodge of the Bronze Knight they had operated on rules left over from the previous members. It was time to shape the destiny of the new Lodge of the Bronze Knight and everyone had a voice.

The search for Terrik Poole begins with a simple locate spell to determine the destination. The spell reveals that Terrik is in Fayde Ehlling, in the warehouse district. The vision reveals a basement with a cambion at the desk with Terrik. A little research determines that Terrik is actually from Fayde Ehlling. The group sets out that same day. Travel is not eventful until the third day out. That night the group is attacked by a pair of owlbears. Grum is almost killed in the first brutal attack. A couple of polymorph spells turning the owlbears into chickens allow for some quick kills. They harvest the hides and skulls. A few more days of travel finds the group at in Arnigs Hollow. The proprietor of the inn knows of the Lodge of the Bronze Knight and River Watch, and recognizes the group. The group travels on passing a large lake and staying at a fishing village there. A few more days and they arrive at the city of Fayde Ehlling.
They have a warrant signed by the Lord Mayor of Bourgansbaine and present this at the gate to the city. After waiting about an hour an official of the city verifies the warrant and lets the group in to pursue its target. They make their way through the streets, but Grim thinks they are being followed. He splits off and trys to find the tail. His efforts are somewhat unsuccessful. He only manages to become the target of an ambush. The others have found the warehouse by this time and are sizing up the location and planning their assault. They are unaware that Grim is fighting for his life. The assassin is using a nasty poisoned blade. Once cut the victim becomes sluggish and clumsy. Grim is the first to feel the poison's sting. While using a bird to scout the area, Kyan spots the fight between Grim and the assassin. The group rushes to his aid, but the assassin is gone when they arrive. Grim is still alive but wounded. Grombus casts a few healing spells and counters the poison. They return to the others that are still watching the warehouse. They know there are nine individuals inside the warehouse. Grim and Grum are going to climb up the warehouse walls and enter through a second story window.
They climb silently and enter through the window with only a pause to jimmy the lock. They climb down onto a cat-walk that runs around the second story. They were silent enough to avoid being heard, but their target was still expecting them. The assassin from earlier had been able to get in and warn his masters. There were several more of the assassins. Terrik Poole and his personal guards were there. The cambion and several undead were also set up in strategic positions. Grim and Grum were immediately attacked. Grim once more faced the assassin from outside. Grum started casting and managed to blind several opponents. Grim was knocked unconcious by a sleep spell. The group outside failed to break down the barred door. A function spell quickly remedied that. They rushed in to aid the goblins. Grum put several of the to sleep, including Terrik. A few of the assassins and all of the undead were killed. Grombus had summoned several more puma (in addition to his pet, Talon). After the fight the city guard showed up to take the ones not named in the warrant prisoner. The group found some paperwork at the hideout that contained a strange coded message. They would have to break the cypher to find out what was going on. The contract was finished and the prisoners taken back to Bourgansbaine. Once again they were heroes. Once again they returned to River Watch to take up their posts. They were bothered though with the coded missive. Could it be a link to the dark elf cult and the cambion mistress that consorted with demons? The strange message could reveal much, or nothing if they failed to crack it.

Rasfrasen,

SLACKER!, need an update. Gaius, Bink, Legar, Turok, Ivan & Abadon. patiently waiting. Ok, I am done waiting so here I will help you start...

Gauis strides into the tavern flanked by a priest of Zhol and a priest of Kithain followed by a ritualist, a librarian and a Sathar warrior in pursuit of an armored orc with a bad attitude. Gaius flips the tavern keep a gold crown and says, "First rounds on me!" He flips the tavern keep another and says with a smile "Legar is relatively harmless as long as his tankard is full, but this should cover the damages or at least help ease the pain." Twisted Evil
