The co-creator of our hobby, Dave Arneson died on Tuesday. Like Gary Gygax, Dave was relatively young.

It would be difficult to over-state the influence of Dave's and Gary's creation.

Two lives well-lived.

Sad news. That last couple of years have been terrible for fantasy and gaming. Rest easy, Dave.

Blackmoor was a crazy, crazy thing. One of the reformulations had a major influence on me, even to this day... the Egg of Coot and such.

Just what was the Egg of Coot? I've been hearing people snicker about it for years, but have never been able to glean just what this refers to.

The Egg of Coot was one of the main NPCs in original Blackmoor. It was malicious, and Arneson's description is priceless. Rather than summarize myself, you can read for yourself:

http://blackmoor.mystara.us/Coot.html

Apparently, don't believe the hype- it's not a reference to E. Gary Gygax, but rather some game store owner.

...

First off, the name is just out there. Second off, the vague description- a man? Jelly? A god? An idea? I love how you can't pin it down. Third, the absolute pettiness of what it does. Graffiti?

...

Arneson was a weird guy, and the campaign was weird, and this all reflects that.

Thanks for that- yeah, Arneson's world sounds weird as hell. I need to check that out.
